FacebookNotifier ver. 1.5.2 Download

FacebookNotifier adds a toolbar item with a badge showing the current unread notifications you have on facebook.

Note: This extension was inspired by another extension, called FB Checker by UntosCZ. However, his extension stopped working, and the url from which I got it is no longer on the web, so I decided to rewrite it. Enjoy.

Change History

Ver. 1.5.2Updated toolbar icon to @2x (Special thanks to Adam Betts). (November 3rd, 2014)
Ver. 1.5.1Bug fix: Facebook changed the html structure of the notifications again. But, alas, I have restored balance in the world. Everything should be working again. (March 14th, 2014)
Ver. 1.5Bug fix: Updated the page that this extension uses to check for notifications. Everything is back to normal.
Updated: Also, there is now a setting to change the frequency that this extension checks for notifications. And you'll also notice that the badge now updates on every Safari window you have open. (April 1st, 2013)
Ver. 1.4Facebook made some changes to the ids of the elements that hold the notification count. This is fixed now. (April 27th, 2012)
Ver. 1.3Facebook apparently removed the notifications from the top of the page that I was pinging. I've updated the extension to ping a proper page. All should work as before. (September 13th, 2011)
Ver. 1.2Bug fix: When you click on the facebookNotifier badge, it will now open in a *new* tab, unless you already have facebook.com open, in which case it will switch focus to that tab. (July 29th, 2011)
Ver. 1.1Added a setting that enables you to have facebook automatically load the "Most Recent" stream rather than the "Top News" stream. NOTE: This setting will affect facebook anytime you navigate to http://www.facebook.com, not just when you click on this extension's toolbar button. (July 19th, 2011)

If Facebook is already opened in one tab, maybe not the active tab, is it possible to set facebooknotifier to switch to the opened Facebook tab, not to open another new tab? Thanks in advance!

@Commandor - I will definitely check into that. If it's possible, I'll post an update.

Another request: Is it possible to include "friend request" and "messages" to the badge count?

@Commandor - Hmm... As far as I know, messages and friend request counts already add to the total count. I will have to look into that.

@Commandor - Next, try quitting Safari, and re-opening it, and let me know if that fixes the count. However, I will definitely look into it on my end, and see if I can't figure out the problem. Thank you very much for letting me know!

Yeah you are right. After restarting safari the unread message was included in the count, but incoming one won't.

Nice. It would be great if you would add an option to open Facebook most recent news stream, instead of the headlines. Thanks!

Great idea !!! Thanks a lot !!! Is it possible to put a badge onto the dock icon? This would be great if Safari is running in the background...

@Chris - That is a good idea, but I don't think it's possible through the Extension architecture. I'll look into it though.

agreed about extension opening up the Facebook page. great extension but its very annoying that when you click on it , it takes the page you are on and loads Facebook on it. it should jump to the active facbebook page or do nothing at all. thanks for the hard work..

Please take a look at this extension of Google+ https://github.com/danls/Google-Plus-Safari-Extension/ I think the behavior of "opening new tab or activating existing tab" is well done in this extension. Thanks a lot!

@motech @Commandor - I believe that this is new to Safari 5.1. I'm pretty sure that before I installed Safari 5.1 it did *not* load in the existing tab. I will look into it.

Great extension, my favorite and the only one I actually use (I've downloaded a few, but only yours was both minimal and useful enough for me to not get annoyed and uninstall.) A small request... could you allow for it to open it as a secure page... like, https:// instead of the normal http:// ? Facebook just has an annoying banner that they display if you don't use the secure one. Thanks!

Can you fix your extension, because in new safari 5.2 they broke (i don't know why) browsing process, a lot of site does not open if your extension is enabled.

I think I found the problem. The badge only shows in one of the Safari windows, if more than one were opened. That's the cause made me confused.

I just switched from Chrome to Safari 6.0 in Mountain Lion and your extension is exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work (for me at least) in Safari 6.0 / OS X 10.8. Thought I'd let you now. Cheers, Matze

Hello, this extension is awesome, but the interval check time is not configurable (and I see in the javascript that it's set to 5000ms). It's too frequent, almost a Denial of Service to facebook.com and using a lot of network bandwidth! Can you make it customizable in the options? Or make other version of the extension with a check every 5 minutes, or at least 1 minute? Thank you, Stefano

@Stefano - The interval used to be configurable, but in the end it was just easier to set a default time. I will try to add the interval setting back in at some point soon. However, the idea that this extension (installed on about 3000 computers) checking 1 page every 5 seconds constitutes a denial of service attack is... well pretty funny. This is a company that just passed 500 million active mobile users. And they have almost 1 billion active users. So at any given moment there must be 50 million to 100 million people logging in, refreshing pages, updating statuses, etc., etc., etc. So I must admit, I'm not to worried about this being seen as a DOS attack.

Thanks, please add it back soon! ;-) Well, I know it's not a DoS, but having my IP address checking facebook.com every 5 seconds in my company's proxy and firewall logs every time I open safari is not the best situation... ;-) I have to disable it every time I'm at work, while doing a check every 5 or 15 minutes would be more reasonable. Thanks anyway for your quick answer and great tool!
